Movie Review!

I spent my time, not to mention dollars at the movies this weekend and so now I have to give it to you straight. That’s why you visit me, right. Well, first I went to see Obsessed, the “thriller” with one of our Chocolate Break favorites, Idris Elba, Beyonce, and Ali Larter. I must admit I wasn’t sure that was going to like this movie and I went reluctantly after having missed the start time, for the Soloist. I have been around the web and back to tell you that the general consensus is that this movie is awful, the actors are bad, etc. Well, I must disagree. I had so much fun watching this movie and obviously so did the people around me. There was so much laughter, a few gasps and a whole lot of yelling at the screen.

Now, was this on par with Fatal Attraction? NO! And it’s not because the actors were bad or because of Beyonce. In Fatal Attraction, Glen Close’s character was really scary. I knew I’d never cheat on anybody, even in a dream after seeing that movie. While Ali Larter did a great job in this role, her character was “crazy”, but not “boil a rabbit” crazy, there’s a difference. What I did appreciate was that this movie had a slight twist, and it’s not the racial difference or Beyonce, so that was interesting-I won’t tell what it is, you’ll have to go see it.

As for all of the bad mouthing on the internet about the movie or critics not reviewing the movie, how can I put this…whatever. I love to see movies with interesting dialogue, brilliant scripts, deep characters, and breathtaking cinematography just as much as the next person. But truth be told, while those movies do make it to my DVD collection, they have lots of dust on them. The movies that I want to see over and over again are the ones that make me laugh or I can relate to in some form of fashion (love the memoirs but I’ve never been a Geisha). And honestly, most professional movie critics just don’t get that. Every now and then, they get it right, but If every movie met the critics or the academy’s approval, the need for mental health professionals would increase dramatically. Y’all know they love some crazy mess. I tell you what, they wouldn’t review my movie either. I don’t think they relate to people who don’t look like them and they dismiss any and everything they don’t understand, that is unless you are a chauffer for someone like them, fighting a jellyfish or trying to “overcome”, they usually give that a thumbs up.

As for Beyonce, she plays the wife. The wife is never the star in these types of movies, she never knows what’s going on for half the movie, so I think people are putting too much weight on her part. We all know she’s the star because of name recognition and her star power. But if any of you can think of a movie like this, where the wife is the star, let me know. I mean does anyone even remember who played the wife in Fatal Attraction or The Hand That Rocks the Cradle? Exactly. No, I didn’t forget she was Beyonce, but was she a clueless wife? Yep. Obsessed was fun. It took a long time to get to the point, but it was fun. Now what I want to know is, when are they going to make a movie when the wife is obsessed with someone she “thinks” is after her husband? That’s a twist.

Oh, and did I mention that Idris was looking some kind of delicious for almost two hours. My advice is forget the chatter, go see the movie.

I’ll save the details on The Soloist for another post.
