Dior Celebrity Makeup Artist: Ricky Wilson

Dior Ricky Wilson

Last week I attend Backstage Beauty, a Dior beauty event hosted by Nordstrom and led by Dior celebrity makeup artist, Ricky Wilson.  Most major department stores hold beauty events throughout the year.  They are a great way to explore new products, experiment with different looks and learn new techniques from some of the beauty industry’s most talented artist.  To start the evening, Wilson worked with a model, introducing new products and demonstrating proper technique.

Dior’s Air Flash was one product that was highlighted in his demonstration. Dior’s Air Flash is a spray foundation, that really goes on very light and smooth. I’d had some experience with Air Flash some time ago and I liked it.  Wilson’s method for creating the perfect canvas: Dior’s Skin Flash (Primer), foundation, concealer, then set with Air Flash.  Once we had the basics down, he turned it over to us.

We were seated at tables in groups of six and using similar products we were to attempt the Wilson’s technique.  Fortunately, a team of Dior makeup artist entered, two for each table, to guide us through this process.  This reminded me of my days of playing in makeup except 30 other women were in the room. The makeup artist assigned to our tables made up one side of our faces and we were to duplicate their artistry on the other side.  To my surprise, I didn’t do too bad.  I achieved one of my glam goals for this year: the ever-elusive smokey eye, with some help from my makeup artist and Dior’s eye palette #008.

Here are a few makeup tips, techniques and principles from Ricky Wilson:

  • Before you begin working with color, create the perfect canvas first.
  • If you can only invest in one basket, invest in your skincare basket.
  • When it comes to foundation, don’t paint the entire house everyday.
  • Makeup application is important.  Wilson explains, “I wouldn’t paint my house with my fingers.”
  • Sometimes a bridge is needed from face to decolletage.  You can use bronzer down the center of the neck to create that.
  • Mascara should not be “Mascary.”
  • If you get mascara on your skin, let it dry.  It will flake off.
  • For extremely long bottom lashes or if you only have three lashes, don’t feel that you have to apply mascara to the bottom just because.
