When I heard that Sam Fine would be conducting a makeup seminar this weekend, I was beyond excited. After all, I have followed his career and advice since his book Fine Beauty first landed on shelves some time ago. I have studied the pages and marveled at his talent. He has a permanent place on my shelf. So I was psyched to attend. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the man of the hour with a warm smile. I wasn’t expecting that, but he definitely put all of the attendees at ease. Fine is as witty as he is gracious. He began with questions first, which gave everyone a chance to warm up a bit. I had a list, but this wasn’t the time or place for an interview. As it turns out the attendees were a mixed bag of aspiring makeup artist, everyday women who wanted to learn how to enhance their own beauty and even a bride-to-be preparing for her big day. So questions ranged from, where does he begin when applying makeup, to his opinion on airbrushing. By the way, he first begins with brows because they frame the face and while not opposed to those who use airbrushing, he prefers to apply makeup by hand.
After several questions, to which he responded with a lesson for both groups, the aspiring artist and the everyday women, Fine began working with a model. He walked us through step by step as he made up half of her face. Yes, only half. The point being that she would get the opportunity to try her hand at creating the same results on the other side. Brows, blending and contouring were all demonstrated along with a few stories that gave us a glimpse of what it is like to work with celebrity clients, red carpet events and ad campaigns. What I really liked is that he didn’t work with one product line. He used several. That was good for me because, while I have more than one product line in my cabinet, there are a few that I had not yet explored. But I will now.
If there were one profound thing that I would share with you from this seminar, it would be Fine’s advice to “leave the rules and regulations at the door.” By the end of the session it had almost become a mantra. As he was working with the model, he also pointed out that the techniques he was using on the model, were also captured on his DVD, Fine, The Basics of Beauty and he was kind enough to autograph a copy for one of my readers.
What do you have to do to win? As always I’m looking for positivity. So send me an inspiring quote. The winner will receive an autographed copy of Fine, The Basics of Beauty DVD!
Below, me with Sam Fine. Can you guess what we talked about? Powder. Sam if you are reading this, I tried the one you recommended. It worked great. Thanks. Also, I’d like to thank the ladies of Strands Hair Studio in Maryland for hosting the event.
