Inspiration can come from the most unlikely places-even a McDonald’s commercial. I’ve been trying to break out of the mold and do something different with my curls and lately the twist out has been my style of choice. Basically it’s just a matter of dividing my hair into sections and taking two strands and twisting them with the product of my choice. I usually let it dry and then untwist and voila!
Wavy, springy curls.
However, after seeing McDonald’s chicken nuggets commercial starring Teyonah Parris, of Mad Men, I decided to wear my twist out in stages. That is, after taking out the twists, a little less separation and fluffing of the strands so that it’s more of a low crinkly look like shown in the first part of the commercial. Then after a couple of days, I separate, fluff and stretch my strands until I have some volume. I haven’t quite gotten to the last commercial picture, but it get’s better each time.
I also liked seeing the curly, highlighted fro in the Special K commercial. While I don’t think it’s a twist-out exactly, I’ll admit that with shrinkage my twist-out begins to look like this (just a little smaller and shorter) after a few days. So it only took one time for someone to yell out “Macy Graaaaay”, as I was walking down the street, for me to avoid that style all together. In fact, this is when I usually rush to wash and restyle, but now I realize, it really is a look. I may rock it.
Have you ever unintentionally, discovered “a look” that works for you?
Here’s what I do for my twist out.
I wash, then follow with a leave-in conditioner.
Detangling is a must. If you don’t have to, count your blessings.
I separate my hair into sections and then create about 10-15 twist.
I use a small amount ( just a dab) of product-enough to put on my finger tip for each twist. This helps lock in the curl pattern.
I make sure that there are separate twist for the back where my hair is longer, to help counteract shrinkage.
Air dry. ( I have cheated with a blow-dryer) but I don’t undo the twist.
The next morning, I separate each twist, using a moisturizer or oil to add shine.
Tip: Some days, I don’t take it down at all. I may decide to pull the twist back into a bun and wear that for a day or two with a cute hair clip. Just one extra style for the road!
Products: I use Devachan or Kinky Curly to help lock in the curl pattern. For shine/moisture I use Devachan’s Mirror Curl or sometimes olive oil.
