The Mixing Bowl

I love to bake.  I always have.  It started with mud pies for my father (which he pretended to eat and love), then I moved on to baking bread with my grandfather, and later baking box cakes for my uncle.  All the while, my mom guided me on when to level the flour  and when not to, when to measure and when to freestyle.  While I love cooking, I think it is my incurable sweet tooth that makes me enjoy baking all the more.  So here is where I’ll share some of my latest creations and a few rainy day stories from the kitchen…

This weekend I got to do some cooking.  I made a peach cobbler (from scratch, of course).  It was my second time and I used a different recipe.  The first go round I used a recipe that was a combination of watching G. Garvin (TV One) and Monique’s cookbook,  Skinny Cooks Can’t Be Trusted.  It came out well with a flaky crust.  I had to break out the rolling pin.  I absolutely loved it and so did my guests.

This go round, I used a recipe from the August issue of Essence magazine (the one with Idris on the cover 2009) where the crust was thicker and heavier, almost like a biscuit.  I loved both recipes, but I prefer to skip the rolling pin wherever possible, so I guess number 2 wins out.  The only thing I’d adjust is that I would cut the sugar just a bit, but it was delicious.  I tried to get a good picture for you.  Next time I’ll use a bowl instead of a plate.  I think it will photo better, but here goes.

I zoomed in so it looks huge, but it really is a small plate.  This recipe is pretty simple.  Give it a try.
