Breakup 2 Makeup: The Basics Pt. 2

Last post we introduced the idea of the makeup minimum.  That is, wearing foundation, powder, lipstick and mascara-no matter what or where you’re going.  Sometimes, it’s a good idea to wear it even if you aren’t going out, just to boost your mood and keep that feeling of consistency.

So here’s some tips.

Foundation: If you’re not sure what your shade is, it’s time for a road trip. Go to the mall and have someone at the makeup counter assist you in finding your shade. Some makeup lines will create samples for you.  It should get you through a few days and if need be, hit up  more than one counter.

Drugstore brands have come a long way.  So don’t be hesitant to give them a try. Some drugstore brands, like Iman Cosmetics will tell you which of their  shades is comparable to the department store brand that you wear on their website.  And you can always take your department store sample with you for comparison.  Right now, I’m loving Maybelline FIT.

Powder: Do purchase a powder to set your foundation.  I know some of you don’t like it because you’ve seen someone walking around with a post-humous effect. That person was dead wrong (pun intended).  Try blotting foundation with a tissue. Then, once you dip your brush in the powder, shake off the excess. Lastly, lightly dust over your face. Do not pack it on. If you want a dewy look, only powder your T-zone.

Recommendations: Iman Cosmetics, Maybelline, Cover Girl, MAC, Lancome

Mascara: There are so many choices, but it comes down to volume or length, natural or drama.  Personally, I like high glam lashes.  My favorites are Dior Show Black Out ($22) and Lancome’s Hypnose ($19).  Drugstore brands: For lengthening I can personally vouch for Maybelline’s Stiletto Lash if you want length ($14).  For volume, try  CoverGirl’s Lash Blast.

Lipstick: This is where you really get to have some fun.  You can wear creamy or matte lipstick, gloss or even lip stain.   Recommendations: Start building a collection. Try a nude, a deep berry, red, pink and an earth tone to create different looks. Try Dolce & Gabanna’s Shine lipstick in Precious.

Next week, we go behind the scenes. Stay tuned.
