Exfoliate: Body and Soul!

L'occitane Honey & Lemon Sweet Sugar Scrub

Exfoliation is an integral part of a good skin care regimen. Exfoliation is the process of removing old, dead skin cells, allowing fresh new skin to shine through.  Over time our skin builds layers or small scales that dull it’s natural beauty.  Women around the world have been exfoliating for centuries, but it is believed that the Egyptians pioneered this process.  While modern science and advances in dermatology provide the option of chemical exfoliation, it really is something that you can do at home.  Using a gentle scrub you can slough or peel away those dead skin cells to reveal a softer, fresher you.  Remember, skin care doesn’t stop at your neck. Exfoliate from head to toe.  You want to choose a different scrub for your face and body as the skin on your face is thinner and more sensitive.

Be gentle.  Exfoliation is not supposed to be a rough or painful process.  You don’t need to use excessive pressure.  If you really want a treat, I suggest you book an appointment at your favorite spa for a body polish.  A body polish means that an aesthetician will exfoliate your entire body.  Trust me, this is very relaxing and you will leave feeling brand new.  What you don’t want to do, is exfoliate your legs on the same day that you shave.  This can cause irritation and redness to the skin.

Just as our skin builds up layers that dull our glow, the same often happens inside.  Day in and day out we collect experiences and have exchanges that may be painful or disappointing.  Our emotional response is to protect our feelings and so we subtly build layers that dim the beautiful, glowing spirit and personality that we really are.  Well, perhaps it’s time to do some inner exfoliation, peeling back layers of defense and removing barriers that hide our exuberance, trust, joy, kindness, humor and generosity that lives inside of us.  Once those layers are gone and we allow our beauty to shine through, then we can begin to attract the relationships and experiences that are consistent with who we are.

By the way, what’s your favorite exfoliating product?  (Click on the links above to see some of my favorite exfoliating scrubs)

Have you tried a body polish?  How are you peeling back the layers?  I’d love to hear your story.

Have a beautiful day!
